Bio
Pianist Jooyoung Kim, a native of South Korea, has been critically acclaimed on international stages for her dazzling technique, superb musicianship, and exquisite artistry. Fanfare Magazine and American Record Guide have hailed her as “richness of talent,” “charm, romance, and elegance,” and “exuberant and bold playing.” Since making her debut at the age of twelve as a soloist with the Korean Symphony Orchestra, Kim has presented numerous solo and chamber recitals in Korea, Japan, Germany, Spain, England, France, Portugal, Italy, Russia, and the United States. She has appeared as a soloist with many orchestras including the Korean Symphony Orchestra, Yonsei Sinfonietta, Yale University Symphony Orchestra, and the Ball State Symphony Orchestra.
Kim has given solo and chamber recitals in a number of notable concert series and venues including the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, St. Martin-in-the-Fields Concert Series in London, Pianoforte Foundation Series, The Fryderyk Chopin Society of Texas Recital Series, Hempy Keyboard Series, Henry Fogel Presents Series, Atelier Concert Series in Paris, Korea/Japan Concert Tour, Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, Chicago Cultural Center, Falcone-Borsellino Hall, Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Kaluga Philharmonic Hall, The American Church in Paris, The American Cathedral in Paris, Indiana Landmarks Center, McAllen Performing Arts Center, Seoul Arts Center, Kumho Art Hall, Sejong Cultural Center, and Youngsan Art Hall. Her Carnegie Hall debut was described as “Jooyoung Kim gave a forceful, poetic, sensitive and at times even playful reading of Liszt. Technically wonderful playing of a very high level.” Her performances have been broadcast live on the radio stations throughout the United States.
She has also been invited to perform on guest artist series in colleges and universities including Anderson University, Taylor University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Indiana University Kokomo, Ball State University, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Grand Valley State University, South Texas College, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Del Mar College, Texas A&M International University, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, among others.
As an active recitalist, soloist, and chamber musician, Kim has performed in numerous music festivals and summer camps including Yong-Pyung Music Festival, Busan Piano Festival, International Piano Festival in Spain, Courchevel International Music Festival, Internationale Klavierakademie Murrhardt, Benefic Chamber Music Camp, Festival of New Music, 40th Festival of New American Music in Sacramento, The American Liszt Society Festival, Aria International Summer Academy, UTRGV Summer Piano Camp, and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.
As a sought-after collaborative pianist and chamber musician, Kim has performed with internationally renowned artists including Bonita Boyd, Jim Walker, Julia Lichten, Piotr Milewsky, Natalia Gutman, Jose Franch-Ballester, among others. Kim’s passion for contemporary music has led her to numerous collaborations with composers and giving acclaimed premiere performances of new works. She has also presented guest recitals, lectures, and master classes for colleges, universities, music teachers’ organizations, and national conferences throughout the United States. Under her mentorship, many advanced students have won competitions and entered prestigious music schools in Korea and the United States.
In addition to performing and teaching, Kim has served as an adjudicator in state, national, and international music festivals and competitions including Indiana State School Music Association Piano Competition, Indiana Music Teachers Association Hoosier Auditions, Carmel Arts Council Young Performers Competition, South Texas Piano Competition, Texas Music Teachers Association Performance Competition, National Federation of Music Clubs Gold Cup Festival, and Magic Valley Music Teachers Association Piano Competition. In particular, she was invited to adjudicate at the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition in 2021.
An award-winning artist, Kim has taken top prizes in numerous national and international competitions, including the Joong-Ang National Music Competition, Yonsei Debut Award, Kingsville International Piano Competition, IBLA Grand Prize International Competition, Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Competition, Ball State University Graduate Concerto Competition, International Beethoven Piano Sonata Competition, Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition, Montpelier Art Recital Competition, and the Taneev International Chamber Ensemble Competition. She has also won grants and fellowships, including Aspire Creative Arts grants and UTRGV faculty travel grants.
Kim, who holds degrees from Yonsei University, Universität der Künste Berlin, and Ball State University, currently serves as Assistant Professor of Piano at Campbellsville University. Prior to joining the faculty at CU, she held faculty positions at Indiana Wesleyan University, Indiana University East, Indiana University Kokomo, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and Anderson University. She has also taught at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and UTRGV Summer Piano Camp during the summer.
Kim is an active member in several professional organizations including College Music Society, Music Teachers National Association, Kentucky Music Teachers Association, Indianapolis Matinee Musicale, Musicians Club of Women, and American Liszt Society.
